NFC in Canada
The Canadian Galaxy S2 does not have Near Field Communications. What a disappointment. I would have switched carriers if it did. http://t.co/0BiVJ7J
Carriers should leave the devices as they are, even if the NFC chip goes unused. For a major carrier to not include tech like NFC significantly delays the general adoption of that technology. Most users opt for a three year contract which means that person is blocked from using this technology for three years. With the speed of mobile progress, three years is a lifetime.
The only way a sensor, and the surrounding application ecosystem, can come into existence is for the hardware to be “ready”. Without NFC chips, NFC apps don’t sell, new payment systems roll out but stagnate, new social networks don’t get created, Canadian NFC innovation stops.
With Interac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interac), before most countries Canadians benefited from one of the worlds best card (now chip and pin) payment systems. It is ubiquitous and changed Canadian culture. The decision to specifically remove NFC from what will be the very popular Galaxy S2, and phones like it, puts off the next step in payment technology for years. Canada will end up following instead of leading this next generation.
